Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
The main thing every policyholder should know is that dental insurance is mainly focused on prevention. Basic services like checkups and cleanings usually receive the most coverage, while restorative treatments such as fillings and crowns are only partially covered. So, for the majority of people, keeping up with their twice a year dental visits is the best way to save as much as possible with their insurance. This approach will lead to better oral health and lower the chance someone will develop a problem that will require more extensive (i.e. expensive!) care in the future.
What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers
Dental insurance coverage varies from provider to provider and from plan to plan, but generally, most look something like this:
- Preventive services are covered 80-100% (checkups, cleanings, X-rays)
- Restorative services are covered 50-70% (fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures)
- Cosmetic services are NOT covered because they are elective procedures (whitening, porcelain veneers)
- Orthodontics are usually allotted a fixed amount of money per individual, though some plans only cover metal braces for patients 18 and under.
